2010-Aaron Sandager & Juvie
In the inaugural Donkey Cup it was filled with amazing memories and not so amazing golf. It all started with Aaron Sandager arming himself with 48 brand new Pro V's at the clubhouse. To which his partner Juvie responded "PARTNER? That's not what I want to hear!" After 63 holes of golf we knew why Sandager required 48 new Pro V's. In the end, Sandager and Juvie the cup on the 62nd hole but the cup was one on the hole prior. On that hole, Juvie buried an improbable 45 foot birdie putt to overcome 18 lost balls by his partner and drink out of the prestigious Cup.
2011- Todd Heil & Jeff Heil (Tremendous Slouches)
This cup wasn't won at the traditional location Golden Eagle. It was won at Victoria's pristine country club Deer Run in a stunning turn of events. It started with the the Defending Champ Aaron Sandager moving to Denver and then 2 weeks prior to the Cup declaring he can't make the Cup. Without a partner and a wife needing him to pick up twigs and pull weeds Juvie then bowed out of the DC. That left Todd and Jeff to show up on the DC date and play the first hole at Deer Run. Todd clinched the cup with his 7 on hole 1 after a 3 putt from 4 feet. It was later determined in an interview in Rolling Stones Magazine the nerves were so high he could barely hold his clubs.
2012- Juvie & Chad Meschke (Wrench Swingers)
Enter Moosh. After Sandager moving to Colorado it was determined Juvie needed a new partner. Enter the silent assassin Chad Meschke. A Hall of Famer at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls but soon on pace to be a Donkey Cup Hall of Famer. This Donkey Cup made a return trip to it's roots at Golden Eagle in Fifty Lakes, MN. Team names were introduced to the DC and the Wrench Swingers (Moosh & Juvie) and Tremendous Slouches (Heil Squared). Unfortunately, a new team name for the Heil brothers lead to the same result...a loss on the 2nd to last hole with almost the same putt. This time it was Moosh. Moosh had a ticklish downhill 30 foot birdie putt that was destined to roll off the green. Instead, it hit the back of the cup and stopped 12 inches behind. The result was a dormie match that was closed out the next hole when the Wrench Swingers made par on hole 8. Juvie and Moosh were able to take back the cup and the Heil brothers are still searching for their first win with an opponent on the course.
2013- Juvie & Chad Meschke (Wrench Swingers)
One for the history books. Like all Donkey Cups, this one did not disappoint. After a Day One tie of 2-2 the second day began with the Wrench Swingers closing out the Tremendous Slouches on the 5th hole of the Hi/Lo Team match to take a 3-2 lead. The first 9 hole individual matches lead to an early closeout of Jeff Heil from Juvie to put the Wrench Swingers just 1 point away from a repeat. However, playing inspired golf Todd Heil made a 6 foot par putt to extend his match. On hole 17 Todd hit the most glorious 8 iron from 165 yards up hill into a 20 mph win to advance to the 18th hole. After winning the 18th hole and clinch a half point the match total stood at 4.5 to 2.5 in favor of the Wrench Swingers. Moving onto the last 2 matches the Tremendous Slouches needed to win both matches. Todd took care of Juvie on the 7th hole while Jeff was able to knock out Moosh with a 10 foot par putt on 8. This lead to the first ever playoff in Donkey Cup history. After much debate and discussion it was determined playing a 9 hole team Hi/Lo was the best way to determine the winner of the 2013 Donkey Cup. The Tremendous Slouches took an early 1 hole lead on the 10th hole but stood on the 16th hole down 1. This par 3 was the defining moment of the 2013 Donkey Cup. With Juvie in with a 5 and Jeff Heil in with a par after a tremendous chip it all boiled down to Todd and Moosh. Both were putting for birdie and with the Tremendous Slouches in with the high ball if Todd just 2 putted from 20 feet and make par the match would be all square. Moosh had other things on his mind as he decided to make his 75 foot birdie putt like it was from 18 inches. A putt for the ages that catapulted the Wrench Swingers to win hole 17 and repeat as Donkey Cup Champions.
2014- Jeff Heil & Todd Heil (Tremendous Slouches)
Just when you thought the Donkey Cup could not get any more dramatic and exciting...it did. After day 1...
Going into the last 9 holes it was Jeff Heil vs Chad Meschke in singles and Todd Heil vs Jeff Jiovanazzo in the other singles match. Jeff was able to close out Chad Meschke with one of his deadly hybrid approaches into hole 7 the Bladder Hole. That lead to the match to be all square and Todd and Juvie came to hole 9 "Rivera" all square and Todd stroking. After two beautiful tee shots Todd put his approach into the first bunker for an impossible bunker shot. Because he had to carry a second bunker even he could not use his Texas Wedge out of the trap. Meanwhile, Juvie pushed his approach shot slightly and got a bad break and his ball ended up underneath rocks part of the retaining wall near the club house. After a contentious ruling the ball was ruled unplayable. Todd hit a spectacular bunker shot except it ended up in the bunker just in front of him. Two bunker shots later he was safely on the green and putting for double. Juvie was unable to make his long 30 foot double putt and Todd two putted for a 7 net 6 hole win and secure the Tremendous Slouches first legit DC win.
